Information for tenants
Last updated: 28 August 2026
Your landlord uses GetPiol to keep their receipt book and account book. This page tells you, as Cameroonian law No. 2024/017 requires, what they record about you, why, and what you can do about it. Your landlord is responsible for this data; GetPiol provides the tool and has no access to it.
Who is responsible
Your landlord — their name and phone number appear on each of your receipts. GetPiol (publisher: see Contact) is the software they use.
What is recorded, and why
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Your name and phone number | To issue your receipts and send them to you |
| The language you want your documents in (English or French) | To give you receipts you can read — it is your choice |
| Your unit, your rent, your tenancy dates | To keep your account |
| Your rent, charges, payments, your security deposit | The account book: what you owe, what you have paid, what will be returned to you |
Nothing else. No identity document, no opinion, no rating or comment about you: GetPiol does not let any landlord “rate” a tenant or look up an applicant’s history.
Who receives this data
You, through your receipts and — in a future version — your online statement. Nobody else. Your data is never used to solicit you nor passed to a third party.
Where it is kept
On your landlord’s phone. Your receipts reach you through WhatsApp, which passes through servers located outside Cameroon, like any WhatsApp message. If your landlord has turned on their phone’s automatic backup, a copy of their receipt book may be kept in their Google account, outside Cameroon.
For how long
For as long as your tenancy lasts, then for the period the law requires for keeping accounting records. After that, your name and phone number are erased from the book; only anonymous accounting entries are kept.
Your rights
From your landlord, you can:
- access what they have recorded about you, and get a copy;
- have an error corrected;
- ask for the erasure of your identity data once your tenancy has ended and the retention period has elapsed;
- object to any use other than keeping your account — there is none;
- refuse to be in the book: your landlord will then give you paper receipts;
- leave instructions about your data after your death;
- lodge a complaint with the Personal Data Protection Authority, once it is set up.
A correction in the account book is written as a new dated entry, never by erasing: this is what makes the book reliable, for you and for your landlord.
Your consent
Your landlord asks for your agreement when the tenancy is set up, after giving you this information. You can withdraw it at any time by telling them; they will then give you paper receipts.
A question, a disagreement
Speak to your landlord first. If you cannot exercise one of your rights, write to getpiolcontact@gmail.com: we will help you word the request — without accessing your data, which we do not have.
